Civil went top of the Lowland League on Saturday after a hard-fought win over Dalbeattie Star at Christie Gillies Park.

Gary Jardine’s men went into the match on fine form after winning their last three games.

Dalbeattie made the trip to north Edinburgh for the second week on the bounce and always pose a threat.

Civil came out firing on all cylinders and took the game to Dalbeattie and had all the possession in the first five minutes of the game.

They were rewarded in just six minutes with a goal they deserved through unlikely scorer, Robbie Laird, the centre half wandered forward and was in the box when a Steven Froude throwin into the box wasn’t cleared, and Laird headed the ball over the top of Vinny Parker and into the Star goal.

That was the stalwarts first goal in three season’s and ended up being the all important goal that secured all three points for Civil.

After Civil’s start, Dalbeattie came back into the game and had several chances and long spells of possession but couldn’t find a goal that would have got them a share of the spoils.

After the game manager, Gary Jardine, said he felt Civil were worthy of their win.

He said “I thought that maybe we scored too early scoring just after six minutes.

“At that time we were playing some excellent football and had Dalbeattie on the back foot, but they grew into the game.

“We played as if we had something to hold onto rather than our natural game and I was disappointed with the performance from the half hour.

“The boys stuck to their task and dug in and for that alone, I think we deserved the three points.”
